Haliwards: Award Winners

Today i made the decision to announce the award winners 3 days earlier than planned. The reason for this is because word is spreading fast about the award winners and tickets are getting snapped up fast and we want to give everyone an opportunity to attend the ceremony. It took us a long time to select our final winners. Hours and hours of research and more phone calls than our cell phone plans allowed.

Please make a note that there are several names of people and organisations missing below. This is because they have not been informed yet or we don’t have confirmation from them. I will continue to update this page as the names are confirmed — Anyway i will stop stalling and introduce you to our fine selection of people.

Adriana Afford
Adriana is well known through the community for her artistic flare and fundraising work. Adriana is the owner of the Argyle Fine Art gallery in downtown Halifax. She has made every effort to accommodate artists across the city and has opened her doors to live music fundraisers. Even in her personal life away from the gallery her friends tell us that she is someone you can fully rely on.

Halifax West High School
In particular students Alanna Langille, Patrick O’Connor, Morgan Patzelt & Chan Kim. These four students obviously have some kind of super power they have tucked away between their math and biology papers. These students are 100% selfless. They have done some amazing work for charity and some awesome things in the school and local community. These students are one (four) of kind.

Lindsay Allain
Years ago Lindsay’s little sister became quite sick and spent some time at the IWK in Halifax. Lindsay had become aware during her visits to the IWK to see her sister that the children’s crafts rooms were rather bare. This was to begin a whole range of fundraisers for the IWK known as the “Crafts for Kids”. Her friends feel she doesn’t get enough praise so it’s time to change that.

Bust a Move for Breast Health
Where do you even begin to start with this one? For those of you in Nova Scotia this one is quite self-explanatory. On January 30, 2010 the QEII foundation/IWK held a massive ‘keep fit’ fundraiser at the Metro Center and along with other various fundraisers they raised in excess of one million dollars for cancer equipment. This award is for the foundations and all those that supported and fund raised for it.

Irvine Carvery
Irvine is a community man and is a loving father. According to the people around him, he is the true meaning of dedication. He is currently the chair of the HRSB and is the president of the Africville Genealogy Society. He is even a basketball coach and referee. The list with this man is endless. His commitment to his family and to his community makes him the perfect person for a Haliward.

Sandra Starratt
Sandra is a french teacher at Halifax West High School. She is actually the person who nominated the students from the school who will also be receiving an award which made this award very unexpected. It became very clear to us  that she is completely selfless. She gives up all her lunch hours to work with the Student Government and thats not the half of it. Here we have one dedicated teacher who puts her students before herself!

Q104 (incl Kool 96.5)
The original nomination was for Q104 but because these two stations are from the same company and both have shown the same qualities mentioned by the nomination we have extended it to both stations. Q104 and Kool have done considerable fundraising and community work. The most recent example was Haiti where many of you would have seen them at Mic Mac. They genuinely are a community company.

So there you have it.  I want to thank everyone who has already purchased a ticket for the ceremony. I don’t think it will take too long until we are sold out. All the details on the ceremony can be found here.

Great to hear BAM is an award winner, but to be fair this was a joint effort by the IWK and QE2 foundations.
  • It has been updated. This was just an article error.
